hey guys
my bike still making this real annoying ticking noise that fluctuates with the revs. I can hear it over the exhaust which is terrible. Ive done the cam chains, checked valve clearences, checked tensioner clearences, i cant seem to figure it. Screw driver analysis suggests its the oil pump chain and sprockets... more money. Do other hawks have a similar noise?

everyone has some noises somewhere.check common items first like location, increase with engine speed, gear, etc.
Oil pump and drive can be common, these are close to historic machines and need a little more TLC.

hi mate, my bros had that same annoying noise, after checking every part you mentioned, i couldn't find out what it was either, what i ended up doing was changing the head, this cured the problem, but i still haven't a clue to what the noise is, hope that helps.

hi folks, does anyone know how to increase the revs in the cdi (black box), i've heard you have to swap something for a cbr600 type, but dont know what, anyone please help, thanks

well, I’ve done tensioners, cam chains, valve screws, tappets, holders, oil pump drive chain plus sprockets, goes like the clappers, but.........

Damn thing still got that noise, annoying as hell.

After last reassemble I thought yeah got it sorted vis-à-vis no noise at idle, but then it came back when I up the revs to 1500 rpm, then the noise continued after that.

I have kerker exhaust and its noisy as hell, but the engine noise is still well hear able.

In an attempt to narrow it down and maybe solicit a response from you knowledgeable ones, I shall describe the noise again

Its like a tick/rattle in the front cylinder (screw driver analysis).
It fluctuates with the revs.

I have not ground the valve ends, nor have I done the tensioner guide blade. Nor have I been into the engine itself and done anything to the pistons/crank/valve guides.

Ive got to the point where I may just ride her with earplugs haha, any help would be great.

Just a guess about your noise. Having checked all those othet items, I might add the possibility of two problems. One is a piston skirt slap, the other being a slightly sloppy piston pin. Both will often go many miles without getting worse then other times may not (!).

Hey Woodrow,

thanks for your advice, I can't believe I didn't pick it earlier, I had a similar problem with one of my XL125s ten years ago, will get one of those 700cc lightweight piston kits of JD, give the crankshaft a tickle up and replace the bearings, and report in. Given that the noise comes from the front, it must be the same problem as Twinsport posted in #2060
