The Hawk lived on in mutated form in Europe as the Revere, which was basically a shaft-drive Hawk.

It seems that Honda has maintained the basic premise of the Hawk/Revere, and updated it significantly.

I'd really, really like to see Honda use this engine in a variety of bikes, such as a light, narrow standard (like the original NT650), and perhaps an adventure bike (like the Suzuki V-Strom, and the BMW F800GS)

And, it seems that Honda are keeping up their tradition of pricing it slightly too high to be a wildly popular bike. It really needs to be $1500 cheaper to compete with the SV.

I wonder if that'd bolt in to the nt650?

No, it won't -- it's shaft drive, and double-sided swing arm.

Now... if they make an adventure bike, that would probably have chain drive, and could possibly be made to fit.

Yeah, I know it's a shaft drive.

Just wondering (out loud) if there might be a way to convert it to a chain drive.

Here's a pic of the NT700V frame. Looks pretty similar to the NT650.

Actually the adventure bike has been around longer than the Hawk itself. the Honda XLV600 Transalp and the XRV750 Africa Twin. The RD04 AT is my choice to replace my DL1000

Actually I think all that is needed are the heads, and maybe the barrels. Looking at the specs it is a 688 the same as a 2mm over sized Hawk. The 4 valve head ( finally) is the selling point for me. The engine is also used in the DN01 coded RC55 and the new and imroved Trans alp. Im assuming that Honda has gone cheap on things and the new heads will mate up with the old. If I come across a wrecked dn01 or NTV700 Ill be doing some research

Cheers

Do you have a year and model code for your "single" transalp?

Oh. Actually the Transalp began in 1986 after an offroad shaft driven vt500 was prototyped. The Dominator is a dual sport but the lineage is the xl/xr 650 single air cooled series Totally differnet bike, same genre though. The XRV750 Africa Twin was based on the Dakar bike NXR750. Now to find an NXR 750 engine and shoe horn it into the NT.

You have an impressive knowledge of old Hondas.I know the Vt500 well.the Hawk's ancestor..There's a sweet Ft500 in my garage right now .I know all about the 650 singles and where they came from, too.I was talking the dualsport bloodline that's all.Forgive me for not splitting hairs. Here's one already done. With the old Hawk Marchesinis no less.

I had an FT500 for a few years..... Nice bike. I put on some aluminium XR bend protapers, bobbed the front fender and a flat blck slip on supertrapp.... And a round headlight off of none less a Hawk GT. It was sweet and broke even on it when I sold it.
