Once again Ive encountered small end of the front rod failure. Apparently due to lubrication problems that were engineered. Any way I will be installing a good rod from my spare engine and new wrist pin. My question is, Has anyone found a cure for this seemingly Hawk GT trait? Ive got a guy going through Honda technical service bulletins but not really expecting much. So if anyone has any Ideas fire away..

Thanx

First off, how many miles on the motor that failed? What was done to it prior to failure? Had it suffered a different failure which may have damaged the oiling system, i.e. scored oil pump lobes, crushed external oil lines, or detritus blocking oil passages?

Hawks don't generally have lubrication problems, even in tuned form.

I'm sorry to say this, but I'd advocate a complete tear down of the bottom end so you can examine the oil pump, the screen, and blow copious amounts of brake cleaner and compressed air through the oil galleries, from both directions.

+1 to Al -Hawks don't usually have this issue. You have a blockage somewhere inside.

No oil issue recall that I am aware of.

There is a spray unit just below the piston that contains an O ring. First questions I have is, is it still there? This can be easily over looked if you don't know what it is. OR the spray unit has such a small hole it could be clogged.

I also have not ever heard of this issue with Hawks. I second (or third, fourth, whatever) the notion that there is some oiling blockage issue somewhere else in the motor.

On this engine there was no real failure. Upon checking the top end it seems rod failure was on the way.

As for this front rod failure being a Hawk thing, a search of Hawk forums will show the ticking issue on throttle transition, which gets worse as time goes.

It was explained that aaftermarket pistons help this problem by providing more oiling for the wrist pin. My thoughts are that the splash lubirication as well as the oil squirts just arent enough on the front cyclinder.

I feel if it was a pump issue it would also effect the rear not just the front.

We are looking into the front oil squirt and perhaps finding a fix. Nothing like Doing hawk work for a class project. In one of north americas top Motorcycle schools.

Play nice, BTT.

And, yes, I'd definitely be interested to hear the outcome of your inquiry.
